Pharmacopeial information for Benzalkonium chloride
Basic Information
Benzalkonium chloride is one kind of Algaecide, this product is a mixture of dimethylbenzyl hydrocarbon ammonium chloride. According to the calculation of anhydrous material, containing hydrocarbon ammonium salt (C22H40ClN) should be 95.0% ~ 105.0%.
Properties
This product is white waxy solid or yellow colloid, aqueous solution shows neutral or weakly alkaline reaction, when shaken to produce a lot of foam.
It is very soluble in water or ethanol, slightly soluble in ether.
Identification of benzalkonium chloride
1, take about 0.2g of this product, add 1mL of sulfuric acid to dissolve, add 0.1g of sodium nitrate, heat on a water bath for 5 minutes, cool, add 10mL of water and zinc powder 0.5g, warm on a water bath for 5 minutes, take 2mL of the supernatant, add 5% sodium nitrite solution 1mL, cool in iced water, and then add 3mL of alkaline β-naphthol test solution, that is, show scarlet red.
2, take the product, add water to dissolve and dilute into a solution containing about 0.5mg per 1mL, according to the UV-visible spectrophotometric method (General 0401), there is a maximum absorption at the wavelengths of 257nm, 262nm and 269nm.
3, take the product 1% aqueous solution of 10mL, add 0.5mL of dilute nitric acid, a white precipitate occurs, filtered, the precipitate can be dissolved in ethanol, the filtrate shows the identification reaction of chloride (General rule 0301).
