What are Intermediates?
Intermediates are also known as organic intermediates. It is an intermediate product that uses coal tar or petroleum products as raw materials to manufacture dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, resins, auxiliaries, plasticizers, etc. It is also called a dye intermediate because it is first used to manufacture dyes. It is also called dye intermediate because it is first used in the manufacture of dyestuffs.
Types of Intermediates
Intermediates are available from cyclic compounds such as benzene, naphthalene, and anthracene through reactions such as sulfonation, alkali fusion, nitration, and reduction. For example, benzene is nitrated to nitrobenzene and then reduced to aniline, which can be chemically processed to become dyes, drugs, vulcanization accelerators, and so on. Both nitrobenzene and aniline are intermediates.
There are also by acyclic compounds such as methane, acetylene, propylene, butane, butene, etc. by dehydrogenation, polymerization, halogenation, hydrolysis and other reactions. For example, butane or butene is dehydrogenated into butadiene, which can be chemically processed into synthetic rubber, synthetic fibers and so on. Butadiene is an intermediate.
Initially, it refers to the intermediates produced during the synthesis of chemicals such as spices, dyes, resins, drugs, plasticizers, rubber accelerators, etc., using coal tar or petroleum products as raw materials. Now it refers to all kinds of intermediate products obtained in the process of organic synthesis in general.
