Benzalkonium Chloride Used as Fungicide in Textile Industry

Properties of Benzalkonium chloride
Benzalkonium chloride is a kind of Bactericidal Algaecide. It is a cationic surfactant, with broad-spectrum, efficient bactericidal algaecidal ability, can effectively control the bacterial and algal reproduction and slime growth in water, and has a good slime stripping effect and a certain degree of dispersion, penetration effect, while having a certain degree of de-oiling, deodorant ability and corrosion inhibition effect.

Easily soluble in ethanol and acetone. Although it dissolves slowly in water, aqueous solution is easier to handle so it is still preferred. Aqueous solutions should be neutral to slightly alkaline and colourless to light yellow. Aqueous solutions foam when shaken and have a bitter taste and a slight almond flavour in concentrated solutions.

Identification of benzalkonium chloride
1, take about 0.2g of this product, add 1mL of sulfuric acid to dissolve, add sodium nitrate 0.1g, heat on a water bath for 5 minutes, cool, add 10mL of water and zinc powder 0.5g, warm on a water bath for 5 minutes, take 2mL of the supernatant, add 5% sodium nitrite solution 1mL, cool in ice water, then add alkaline β-naphthol solution 3mL, that is, the scarlet red.
2, take the product, add water to dissolve and dilute into a solution containing about 0.5mg per 1mL, according to the UV-visible spectrophotometric method (General 0401), there is a maximum absorption at the wavelengths of 257nm, 262nm and 269nm.
3, take the product 1% aqueous solution of 10mL, add 0.5mL of dilute nitric acid, a white precipitate occurs, filtered, the precipitate can be dissolved in ethanol, the filtrate shows the identification reaction of chloride (General rule 0301).
