Benzalkonium chloride (BAK or BAC) is the most commonly used preservative in ophthalmic preparations. Benzalkonium chloride has been included in the FDA's Guide to Inactive Components for use in ophthalmic preparations, etc., at concentrations ranging from 0.004% to 0.025% in various eye drop products. Contraindicated with aluminium, anionic surfactants, raffinate, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, iodide, sulfonamides, zinc sulfate. Benzalkonium chloride is a cationic surfactant broad-spectrum bactericide, can change the permeability of bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, so that the bacterial cytoplasmic material extravasation, impede its metabolism and play a role in killing, the role of Gram-positive bacteria is stronger, on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, acid-resistant bacilli and bacterial spores are ineffective. It can combine with protein rapidly, and the effect is significantly reduced in the presence of blood, cotton, cellulose and organic matter.
Benzalkonium chloride (quaternary ammonium salts), commonly used in imported eye drops, has a broad antibacterial spectrum. For example, this preservative is used in Palotan, Parrot, Shine, and so on.
