Sources of Geraniol
Geraniol is primarily derived from geranium, rose, rose hips, Java lemongrass, bee mint, and to a lesser extent in high grade bergamot, happy sage, coriander, eucalyptus, everlasting flower, lavender, lemongrass, chamomile, thyme, wild orange, ylang ylang essential oils.
Production method of geraniol
1. Geraniol is produced industrially, using lauricene as raw material. The primary chloride of lauricene is co-heated with sodium acetate to give a mixture of acetate esters of geraniol and nerol. This crude ester is then saponified and distilled to give a mixture containing about 60% geraniol and 40% nerol, which is carefully fractionated to give a high grade of geraniol. With a-pinene as raw material, through the linalool can produce high quality geraniol.
2. Geraniol can be free from citronella oil, Indian rose vanilla oil and other natural essential oils: add anhydrous calcium chloride in essential oils, can generate crystalline derivatives of geraniol, water that is decomposed into geraniol and calcium chloride, precipitation of the oil layer washed with warm water, and then steam distillation of the pure product. Citral is reduced in dilute ethanol solution of acetic acid with the participation of sodium amalgam; or it is made from linalool by co-heating with water catalyzed by boric acid or borate.
Uses of Geraniol:
Widely used in floral daily flavor, can be used in apple, strawberry and other fruit flavors, cinnamon, ginger and other flavors of edible flavors, can also be made into ester flavors.
Geraniol is the main agent of rose system flavor, and it is the indispensable raw material for flavoring in all kinds of floral flavor, and it can also be regarded as sweetening agent, and it can also be used in the preparation of food, soap, and daily use cosmetic flavor. Products made from natural essential oils, formulated for food, daily use cosmetics flavor, containing geraniol greater than 90%, formulated for soap flavor, containing geraniol greater than 80%. Industrial products geraniol and nerol is the manufacture of vanillyl alcohol, vanillin, citral, hydroxyvanillin, violet ketone and vitamin A raw materials, geraniol synthesized with a variety of esters, but also a very good spice.
Used in medicine for antibacterial and anthelmintic; clinical treatment of chronic bronchitis is more effective, not only to improve pulmonary ventilation and reduce airway resistance, and to improve the body's immune function is also quite beneficial, and has a rapid onset of action, the advantages of small side effects.
Pharmacological effects:
1. Antibacterial: it has antibacterial and fungal effects, the lowest inhibitory concentration of 0.39mg/ml for Serratia marcescens and Microsporum audouinum.
2. Deworming: It can expel Ascaris lumbricoides in guinea pigs.
3. Others: Small dose can inhibit the spontaneous activity of rats. Oral administration to rats can inhibit gastrointestinal motility (slowing down the passage of foodstuffs), but has little effect on the motility of the large intestine. It has a laxative effect near the lethal dose. Small oral doses have a mild diuretic effect in rats.
Toxicity: Toxic to some extent. Oral LD50 is 4.8g/kg in rats, and 50mg/kg in rabbits, and it is effective in the clinical treatment of chronic bronchitis.
