Ultra-high molecular weight Polyethylene fiber is referred to as UHMWPE fiber, UHMWPE fiber is a kind of linear polyethylene, the molecular weight of which is more than 1.5 million, and it is regarded as one of the "world's three major high-tech fibers". It has the characteristics of light weight, high strength, impact resistance, etc. It can replace the aramid fiber to become the preferred material in the field of individual bulletproof.
Main Properties of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber
(1) Mechanical properties
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has higher tensile strength compared with other high-tech fibers. With the same linear density, it is fifteen times stronger than steel wire rope, forty percent higher than aramid, and ten times higher than high-quality steel fibers and ordinary chemical fibers. In addition, UHMWPE fibers also have higher strength and modulus compared to carbon and boron fibers, providing the highest strength of any material of the same quality.
(2) Impact resistance
UHMWPE fibers excel in impact resistance. Compared to other high-tech fibers, they have a high capacity to absorb energy during deformation and resist impact. Compared to aramid fibers and carbon fibers, which are among the "world's top three high-tech fibers," UHMWPE fibers are more impact resistant. In addition, compared to carbon fibers, UHMWPE fibers have a higher impact resistance and can absorb more of the total impact energy.
(3) Abrasion resistance
Comparing the friction coefficient of reinforced plastics of UHMWPE fiber with carbon fiber and aramid fiber, the abrasion resistance and bending fatigue of UHMWPE fiber are much higher than carbon fiber and aramid fiber. So its wear resistance is more excellent than other high performance fibers. Also due to its superior wear resistance and bending resistance, it has superior processing performance and is easy to be made into other composite materials and fabrics.
(4) Chemical resistance
UHMWPE fibers are not easily corroded by chemicals, and only very few organic solutions can cause mild swelling. In contrast, comparing the strength retention of UHMWPE fibers and aramid fibers in different chemical media, the corrosion resistance of UHMWPE fibers is significantly higher than that of aramid fibers, and its property structure in acid, alkali, and salt is particularly stable, with only a slight loss in Sodium hypochlorite solution.
(5) Optical resistance
The optical resistance of UHMWPE fibers is also the most superior among high-tech fibers. Aramid fibers are not UV resistant and should only be used if direct sunlight is avoided. Comparing UHMWPE fibers with nylon and aramid, UHMWPE fibers have significantly higher strength retention than the other fibers.
(6) Other Properties
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber also has good hydrophobic properties, water and moisture resistance, electrical insulation properties and long zigzag life, is the only high-tech fiber that can float on water, or a more ideal low-temperature materials. But its melting point is low. In the processing of its temperature can not exceed 130 ℃, otherwise it will be because of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers between the molecular chain between the weak force, so that the phenomenon of creep, shorten the service life. There is no dyeing group on the UHMWPE fiber, which makes its infiltration poor, and it is difficult for the dye to penetrate into the fiber, resulting in its poor dyeing properties.
