Sodium Gluconate in the Construction Industry
Concrete is a combination of materials, made from cement, aggregates, admixtures and water. Concrete is the most abundant of all man-made materials. Three-quarters of concrete is aggregate, however the most active component in concrete is the cement paste. The nature and properties of concrete are largely determined by the nature of the cement paste. Admixtures in concrete provide beneficial effects such as accelerating setting, delaying setting, allowing air to form bubbles, reducing water consumption and increasing plasticity. Often several types of admixtures are used in cement, and the different types of admixtures can reinforce each other in some applications.
Sodium gluconate can be used as an admixture in concrete, where it functions as: water reducer and retarder.
Sodium gluconate is generally used alone, but can also be used in combination with other retarders such as carbohydrates and phosphates. Sodium gluconate is a crystalline powder. It is produced under properly defined and controlled conditions. The compound is chemically pure and non-corrosive. The quality is constant. These characteristics guarantee reliable and reproducible results in applications.
1. Sodium gluconate as water reducing agent
The water-cement ratio (W/C) can be reduced by adding a water reducing agent. By adding sodium gluconate the following effects can be obtained: 1. Improved workability. The addition of sodium gluconate improves the workability when the W/C ratio remains unchanged. In this case, sodium gluconate acts as a plasticizer. In the sodium gluconate addition of 0.1% or less, the degree of improvement of workability is proportional to the amount added. 2. Improvement of strength. When the cement content remains unchanged and the water content in the concrete can be reduced (i.e. W/C is reduced). When the addition of sodium gluconate is 0.1%, the amount of water can be reduced by 10%. 3. Reduce the cement content. The water and cement content is reduced in the same proportion, and the W/C ratio remains unchanged.
2. Sodium gluconate as retarder
Sodium gluconate can significantly delay the setting time of concrete. At dosages of 0.15% or less, the logarithm of the onset setting time is proportional to the dosage, i.e. doubling the dosage delays the onset setting time up to ten times, which extends the time that can be worked from very few hours to a few days without loss of strength. This is an important advantage, especially in hot weather and when long periods of time are required.
