What are Bio-based Materials
Bio-based Materials refer to a new class of materials manufactured by biological, chemical and physical means using renewable biomass, including grains, legumes, straw, bamboo and wood powder, and animal fur waste. They mainly include bioplastics, bio-based platform compounds, biomass functional polymers, functional sugar products, wood-based engineering materials, leather-based service materials and other products, which are green, environmentally friendly, renewable raw materials and biodegradable.
Classification of Bio-based Materials

According to the classification of product properties, bio-based materials can be divided into bio-based polymers, bio-based plastics, bio-based fibers, bio-based rubbers, bio-based coatings, bio-based material additives, bio-based composites, and products made from various types of bio-based materials. Among them, bio-based biodegradable materials have the characteristics of green, environmentally friendly, renewable raw materials and biodegradable that traditional petroleum-based plastics and other polymer materials do not have; bio-based fibers have been widely used in fashion, home, outdoor and industrial fields, and are gradually moving towards the industrial scale of practical application and industrialization; bio-based plastic products in packaging materials, disposable tableware and shopping bags, baby diapers, agricultural films, textile materials and other fields have gained a lot of popularity. According to common product forms, bio-based materials can be divided into five categories: bio-based platform compounds, bio-based plastics, polysaccharide-based bio-based materials, amino acid-based bio-based materials, and wood-plastic composites. Among them, bio-based platform compounds are chemical monomers that are polymerized into raw material macromolecules, such as lactic acid, 1,3-propanediol, etc. Bio-based plastics are the most widely used and intensively researched bio-based materials at present, and the representative products are polylactic acid, polyhydroxy fatty acid esters, etc.

Bio-based materials can be further divided into bio-fibers, bio-extracts, and agricultural wastes. Biofibers are fibers extracted from trees, hemp, coconut shells, bamboo, casein, silk, and so on. Bio-extracts are materials that are synthesized using components extracted from biological raw materials as raw materials. Agricultural waste refers to materials made from fruit peels, coffee grounds, shrimp and crab shells, animal fur waste, etc. as raw materials.
